Where were the words I meant to say before you left,
When I could see your breath lead where you were going to?

(— from January Hymn by the Decemberists, included at the end of this podcast.)

Understanding this lyric was a powerful moment for me. In winter, you can see peoples’ breath, but think about it: as a person walks, their breath shows where they have been, not where they are going. This breath clearly means something different. Looking back, the singer realizes that the mist from the girl’s breath was a foreshadow of where “she” was going: outside of her body. In other words, he saw her breath and later realized it signified that she would soon die, following her breath and leaving her body behind.
